Problem with tilde above stau in plot title

I am trying to plot the supersymmetric stau mass, and I am using the code

#tilde{#tau}_1

to label the stau 1 particle in the title and legend. However, the tilde is not high enough above the tau, and the tilde and the top of the tau are overlapping. Any ideas on how to force the tilde a bit higher?

Are you using root on Mac with cocoa backend ?
