Is it possible to digitize graphs and diagrams from image in ROOT (png, pdf etc)?

Not really … there is no tool doing that

You can try something like http://www.graphreader.com/, ROOT cannot do this on its own.

It’s a good idea to contact the author and ask for the histogram: this adds to getting the community towards sharing the data, not just the plots!
