As explained in this old post, the instructions for citing ROOT are provided on the GitHub project, which explains that it can be cited using the Zenodo record and referring to the original publication. Unfortunately, not every version is available on Zenodo. I recently went to cite v6.32/04, but there appears to be no such citation available, leaving me either to provide a generic citation (which will link to whatever the latest version is when clicked) or to cite some other version.
It would be very nice if
- each official release of ROOT was associated with a Zenodo citation and
- ROOT were to participate in the HSF BiblioHEP project, which currently lacks any citation of the Zenodo DOIs and might therefore lead to poor citation practices down the line, perhaps by routinely updating a “latest version” citation.
