Why the negative potentials are used in Gem TPC?

In Gem TPC, usually the zero potential is added on readout electrode, and the potentials on Gem and drift electrodes are negative, why?
when the zero potential is added on drift electrode, and the potentials on Gem and readout electrode are positive, something bad will occur?

For DC readout, the readout electrode is typically grounded, otherwise you have to apply high voltage to the readout electronics.
This question has nothing to do with Garfield++ though…
