Somewhere between root 6.02 and root 6.04 all the calls to Evaluate were removed from TGDMLParse.cxx.
(The member is still there.) This means the expressions can not be used in the definitions of solids or volumes. Will this capability be implemented in a different way?

Indeed, this was removed because the implementation (based on TFormula) was incomplete and produced a lot of performance overhead in some cases. As we intended the GDML import/export to be only an exchange format for ROOT geometry and not a definition language, there are no plans to change this in the near future. Any contribution is however welcome of course.
