When TDataFrame has trouble reading a file (e.g. because the file is empty), it segfaults and crashes. This is particularly irritating when multiple files are passed to TDataFrame, some of which are perfectly fine.
Could TDataFrame instead print an error detailing why the file could not be read, and recover as gracefully as possible (at the very least, just skipping to the next file)?
ROOT Version (e.g. 6.12/02): 6.12
Platform, compiler (e.g. CentOS 7.3, gcc6.2): lcg 92
yes it could!
I believe this has been fixed in the latest dev release v6.13 and in the upcoming stable release v6.14.
Files with empty TTrees are just treated normally (event loop starts, does 0 iterations, ends), non-existing files and files with a non-existent tree cause an error (not a crash).
Please check if your case is covered (you can get both v6.13 and latest master from lcg) and let us know if it is not.
