ROOT msi installer

Why didn’t installer ask me where to install ROOT?

Hi Timur,
Strange… I will check and let you know.
Cheers, Bertrand.

Hi, Bertrand.

I have an idea - before I started msi, I’ve already had ROOTSYS environment variable. And root’s msi installs root in this location.

Timur,

If you want to change installation directory, select ‘Custom’ Setup (see attached pictures)

Cheers,
Bertrand.

No, Bertrand, I do not want to install ROOT from binary msi file and I sure know, how and what to do with this binary
I’ve just commented strange and non-intuitive silent behaviour of ROOT’s installer. When you install, for example, MS Office or Visual Studio it asks you explicitly where to install, without any strange silent paths to install.

Hi Timur,

Then why do you ask and care and make us discuss this? You explicitly refer to the MSI. What the MSI does is the proper behavior for 99% of all people updating ROOT. If it’s not adequate for you then please click on “Custom”.

Axel.

Why do people ask in this forum about different things in ROOT?
I hoped, that someone can fix this.

Timur,

very frankly, your request looks totally unreasonable. As shown by Bertrand, you get
a simple and trivial user interface to customize the installation if you do not like the default.

Rene, Just tell me, WHAT IS DEFAULT. That is not obviuous to me, that’s why I asked original question.

Look at the file msi01.gif posted by Bertrand. You will see the default location c:\root

Aha! Nice. So, to know, where the “Typical” option will install ROOT, I have to select “Custom” first.
BTW, this is my shot msi02.jpg, you see, it’s not c:\root on my machine.

Yes, may be. But good installers had logic and consistency and show me the destination folder, even if I’m using default or “Typical” installation options. I wanted ROOT’s msi be one of such installers.
