The distribution for Unbuntu is up to 19. Now the 20.04LTS is available, can one simply use the build for ubuntu19 or just wait for the dedicated build for 20.04 LTS?

We will add ROOT builds for Ubuntu 20.04 soon. In the mean time, I think you need to build from source. Ubuntu 20.04 is already running in the nightly builds, but no binary package exists for it yet.

In the meantime, if you do not want to build ROOT yourself, you can try the ready-to-use ROOT 6.20/04 “Ubuntu 19 gcc9.2” binary distribution.
You may see some “standard library mismatch” warnings but I think you can ignore them.
