How is Chi^2 calculated when no erros are given?

Fitting a function to a histogram returns a $chi^2$ value. How is it calculated exactly when there are no errors given?
Which errors are assumed?

default_bin_error = sqrt(bin_contents) and bins with bin_error = 0 are excluded from the fit
