Error with ROOT-6.24.00-patches-branch

ROOT Version: v6-24-00-patches branch
Platform: MacBook Air M2 2022, MacOS Ventura 13.3.1
Compiler: Apple clang version 14.0.3 (clang-1403.0.22.14.1)
Target: arm64-apple-darwin22.4.0
Thread model: posix

Hello, some months ago I asked in this forum about a problem building ROOT-6.24 on this same computer but with macOS Monterey. The issue was correctly solved.

The thing is that I updated my machine to MacOS Ventura 13.3.1 and reinstalled ROOT following the steps described in the link above. Building process was correct but now I cannot “use” ROOT, since when I run a simple script o try to (as a naive example) open a TBrowser, ROOT, breaks. Some examples provided below:

  1. Running a simple plotting script:
    1.1. From command line:
root -l test.C
root [0]
Processing test.C...
warning: Failed to call `test()` to execute the macro.
Add this function or rename the macro. Falling back to `.L`.

1.2. Loading it as macro:

root [1] .L test.C
root [2] plotFunction()
root [3] root.exe(60310,0x16b41b000) malloc: Heap corruption detected, free list is damaged at 0x600003dd6500
*** Incorrect guard value: 0
root.exe(60310,0x16b41b000) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug
  1. Open a TBrowser:
root [0] new TBrowser
root.exe(62409,0x1df295b40) malloc: Heap corruption detected, free list is damaged at 0x600001f17600
*** Incorrect guard value: 0
root.exe(62409,0x1df295b40) malloc: *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug

Hope you can help me, thanks a lot in advance, Diego

Hi @Diego_Costas_Rodrigu ,

Are you sure you need to build ROOT on your own? Please refrain from doing it, instead install ROOT via some package manager (Installing ROOT - ROOT).

Even if you really need to build ROOT on your own, I highly discourage you to build from a patches branch of an old release, please build from latest-stable (6.28/04 at the time of writing).

Cheers,
Vincenzo

Hi, yes, I need to build ROOT by my own because I need the CXX Standard to be 11.

The patches branch was recommended by two diferent people from the forum, and I am quite sure the 6.28 version does not allow CXX_STANDARD=11 (as some of my coworkers have told me).

I will try to install the version you recommend but, please, could you help me understand what might be going with my current instalation? Since it is the one I need.

Thanks again for your time, Diego

I see, for C++11 support you do need ROOT 6.24 as it is the last version to support that old standard. That’s unfortunate.

Have you made sure that you completely erased any previous ROOT build and installation from your system, before reinstalling it after the update to mac 13?

After this, do you imply that the ROOT build went correctly, no errors reported, and you only see the errors at runtime?

What is the cmake configuration command you are using to build ROOT?

Cheers,
Vincenzo

Hi again Vicenzo,

So I deleted my ROOT installation (I do not know if there’s a better procedure to completely erase it, I just rm -rf the source, build and install folders) and tried to install again ROOT v6.24.00-patches cloning the source code from GitHub repository.

I find strange behavior in the generation and then the compilation crashes if try to do it with make -j4, but works if I just compile with make, here are the instructions provided and output:

cmake -DCMAKE_CXX_STANDARD=11 -Dall=ON -Dxrootd=OFF -DPYTHON_EXECUTABLE=/opt/homebrew/bin/python3.9 -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/Users/diiego/software/ROOT/ROOT_6.24/install /Users/diiego/software/ROOT/ROOT_6.24/v6-24-00-patches

Then the installation crashes if I do make -j4:

But seems to work fine if just make (compilation’s about 41% and FREETYPE stage seems completed), but will write again when compilation is completed/it crashes.

Thanks again, Diego

Ok so it compiled correctly (with a lot of warnings) but once again if want to perform a simple operation like opening a TBrowser it crashes:

Hi @Diego_Costas_Rodrigu ,

It may still be that 6.24 won’t work for MacOS 13, a lot of changes have happened in mac in the past couple of years and consequently a lot of fixes had to be added in ROOT.

I will try to understand if we can track down the specific patches that we applied for newer mac versions and that probably were not backported to 6.24.

Cheers,
Vincenzo

Ok thanks!
